Bottled Water Isn't Automatically Cleaner Than Tap
Sometimes it's literally the tap, in a bottle.
Bottled water sells the feeling of purity. The reality is more of a coin flip.
Some of it is just tap water
A meaningful share of bottled water is municipal tap water that's been filtered and repackaged. You're often paying a huge markup for convenience and branding, not a fundamentally cleaner source.
The microplastic twist
Studies keep finding microplastics in bottled water — frequently more than in tap — shed from the plastic bottle and cap itself. The container meant to protect the water adds its own particles.
The move
A decent home filter plus a reusable bottle usually beats bottled water on cost, plastic, and often microplastics. If you rely on bottled, glass or boxed water avoids the plastic-shedding issue.
