Your Ears Were Not Built for Cotton Swabs
The wax you're removing is mostly doing its job.
Cotton swabs feel like ear hygiene. For most people, they quietly make things worse.
Earwax is a feature, not a flaw
Wax cleans, moisturizes, and protects the ear canal, and it naturally migrates out on its own. A swab pushes most of it deeper, packing it against the eardrum — the leading DIY cause of blockages and that muffled, plugged feeling.
The irritation loop
Scraping the delicate canal can cause tiny abrasions and itchiness, which makes you want to swab more, which irritates it more. Even the boxes say "do not insert into ear canal" in the fine print.
The move
Clean the outer ear with a washcloth and leave the canal alone. If you get real buildup, a few drops of mineral or olive oil can soften it — or see a professional. Ears are largely self-cleaning.
