Diet Soda's "Zero Calories" Comes With Fine Print
No sugar, sure. But your body still expects it.
Zero calories sounds like a free lunch. Diet soda is where you read the fine print.
Your brain still tastes sweet
Artificial sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar. Your body tastes intense sweetness, braces for a sugar rush that never arrives, and can respond by ramping up cravings later. "Zero calories" isn't the same as "no effect."
The gut question
Some sweeteners appear to nudge the gut microbiome and blood-sugar response in ways researchers are still untangling. The science isn't settled — but "studied and uncertain" is a different thing than "proven harmless."
The move
Diet soda is a reasonable step down from regular soda if you're cutting sugar. But it's a bridge, not a destination. Sparkling water with real fruit gets you the fizz without the chemistry set.
