Fermented Foods Are a Cheap Gut-Health Win
Some of the best things for your microbiome are the oldest foods around.
Long before "probiotic" was a marketing word, people were fermenting food. Turns out our guts were paying attention.
Living foods
Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, and miso are full of beneficial bacteria and the byproducts of fermentation. Research links regularly eating fermented foods to a more diverse gut microbiome — which supports digestion, immunity, and even mood.
Better than a pricey pill
A jar of real sauerkraut or a cup of plain kefir often delivers more, and more varied, live cultures than an expensive probiotic supplement — for a fraction of the price.
The move
Add a small daily serving of a fermented food you actually like. Look for "raw," "unpasteurized," or "live cultures" on the label — shelf-stable, cooked versions lose the good bacteria — and keep it in the fridge.
