Most People Get Half the Fiber They Need
The most underrated nutrient hiding in plain sight.
Amid all the focus on protein and carbs, fiber is the nutrient most people quietly fall short on — and it does a lot.
Why fiber punches above its weight
Fiber feeds your gut bacteria, steadies blood sugar, lowers cholesterol, and keeps you full and regular. Most adults get only about half the recommended amount, largely because ultra-processed foods have it stripped out.
Where to find it
The best sources are unglamorous and cheap: beans, lentils, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. (Notice those keep coming up — they tend to be the answer.) Whole foods beat fiber "added" to processed products.
The move
Nudge fiber up gradually — swap refined grains for whole, add beans to meals, keep fruit and veg in easy reach. Increase it slowly and drink water, and your gut adjusts comfortably.
