Are Plant-Based Meats Actually Healthier?
"Plant-based" and "healthy" aren't the same thing.
Plant-based burgers and sausages have gone mainstream. Whether they're an upgrade depends on what you compare them to.
Processed is processed
Many popular meat alternatives are ultra-processed — built from protein isolates, oils, binders, and flavorings, and often as high in sodium and saturated fat as the meat they replace. "Made from plants" doesn't automatically mean nutritious.
Where they can win
They can be a reasonable swap for the environment and for cutting back on red and processed meat. And they're a genuine convenience for people eating less meat. Just don't confuse them with whole-food plant proteins like beans, lentils, or tofu, which are far simpler.
The move
If you enjoy plant-based meats, treat them like the processed convenience food they are — fine sometimes, not a health food. For an everyday upgrade, whole plant proteins (beans, lentils, tofu) beat both the burger and its plant-based imitation.
