How to Read a Protein Powder Label
A useful product, wrapped in some of the busiest marketing around.
Protein powder can be a genuinely handy way to hit your protein goals. The label is where it gets noisy.
Protein per scoop vs the hype
Ignore the front-of-tub buzzwords and find two things: grams of protein per scoop and the ingredient list. A clean powder is mostly a protein source (whey, casein, pea, etc.) with minimal extras. Watch for tubs padded with fillers, gums, and a long list of added ingredients.
Added sugar and "proprietary blends"
Some powders sneak in a lot of sugar, and others hide amounts behind a "proprietary blend." Simpler is usually better — a short list and a clear protein number beat a formula stuffed with mystery add-ins.
The move
Most people can hit their protein from food, but a simple powder is a fine helper. Pick one with a clear protein-per-scoop number, low added sugar, and an ingredient list you can actually read.
