Saline Nasal Spray Is a Gentle Fix for a Stuffy Nose
Just salt water — and that's exactly why it's so useful.
When you're congested, the medicated sprays work fast but come with a catch. Plain saline is the low-drama alternative.
Why saline is different
Saline (saltwater) spray simply rinses and moisturizes the nasal passages — flushing out allergens, mucus, and irritants. There's no medication, so there's no rebound congestion, and it's safe to use as often as you like, including for kids and during pregnancy.
The one to be careful with
Medicated decongestant sprays (like oxymetazoline) shrink swollen tissue quickly, but using them more than a few days can cause rebound congestion — a stuffiness loop as they wear off. Saline has none of that risk.
The move
For everyday congestion, allergies, or dry winter air, reach for plain saline spray or a rinse first. Save the medicated sprays for short-term use, and don't run them past a few days without a doctor's okay.
