The Talc Question in Powders, Explained
Why some baby and body powders switched away from it.
Talc has been a staple in baby powder, body powder, and some cosmetics for generations. In recent years it's gotten complicated.
The contamination concern
Talc itself is a soft mineral. The worry is that it's mined near asbestos, a known carcinogen, and can be contaminated with it if not carefully purified. That contamination — not talc alone — is the core of the concern and the lawsuits you may have heard about.
The easy alternative
Because of the uncertainty, many brands reformulated to cornstarch-based powders, which do the same job (absorbing moisture, reducing friction) without the asbestos question. Reputable cosmetic talc is tested, but cornstarch sidesteps the issue entirely.
The move
If you use body or baby powder, cornstarch-based versions are a simple, low-worry swap. Check the label — many "talc-free" powders make it easy to choose.
