Do You Actually Need a Fish Oil Supplement?
Omega-3s are great — the pills are a more mixed story.
Fish oil is one of the best-selling supplements around. Whether you need it depends mostly on what's already on your plate.
Food first
The omega-3s in fish oil (EPA and DHA) genuinely support heart and brain health. But if you already eat fatty fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel) a couple of times a week, you're likely getting enough — and whole fish comes with protein and other nutrients a capsule doesn't.
Quality varies
For people who rarely eat fish, a supplement can help fill the gap. Just know that fish oil can oxidize (go rancid), so freshness and a reputable brand matter, and megadoses aren't better.
The move
Aim to get omega-3s from fish first. If you don't eat much, a modest, fresh fish oil (or algae oil for plant-based diets) is a reasonable fill-in — no need for giant doses.
