The Hidden Ingredient in Many Keratin Treatments
That smooth blowout can come with fumes worth knowing about.
Keratin smoothing treatments deliver glassy, frizz-free hair. Some of them also release something you didn't sign up for.
The formaldehyde question
Many traditional keratin treatments work with formaldehyde, or ingredients that release it when heated by the flat iron. Formaldehyde is a known irritant and carcinogen, and the salon fumes are the real exposure — for you, and especially the stylist doing it all day.
The label games
Watch for "formaldehyde-free" claims paired with ingredients like methylene glycol or formalin — different names that can release formaldehyde under heat. The claim and the chemistry don't always match.
The move
If you want a smoothing treatment, ask exactly what's in it, look for genuinely formaldehyde-free formulas, and make sure the space is well-ventilated. It's one of the few beauty services where the air quality matters as much as the result.
