The SPF in Your Makeup Isn't Really Protecting You
The number is real. The amount you apply isn't.
Foundation or moisturizer with "SPF 30" feels like sunscreen you don't have to think about. The math says otherwise.
It's about how much you apply
SPF ratings assume a thick, even layer — far more product than anyone rubs on as makeup. To actually get the SPF 30 on the label, you'd need several times the makeup you normally wear. In practice, you're getting a fraction of the protection.
Coverage gaps
Makeup also misses spots sunscreen shouldn't — your hairline, ears, neck. And you rarely reapply foundation every two hours the way sun protection needs.
The move
Treat SPF in makeup as a small bonus, not your sun protection. Put a real sunscreen on underneath. The makeup SPF is the decorative stitching on the seatbelt, not the seatbelt.
