"Wheat Bread" Is Often Just White Bread With a Tan
Brown color is not the same as whole grain.
Grab a loaf labeled "wheat bread" and you'd assume it's the wholesome choice. The color is doing a lot of the lying.
Brown does not mean whole grain
All white bread is technically "wheat" bread — it's made from wheat. And that warm brown color? It's often caramel coloring or molasses, not whole grains. The loaf can be mostly refined white flour with a tan.
The word that matters
The one you want is whole. "100% whole wheat" or "whole grain" as the first ingredient means the bran and germ are still in. "Enriched wheat flour" means they were stripped out and a few vitamins added back.
The move
Ignore the color and the front of the bag. Read ingredient one. If it doesn't start with whole, it isn't.
