Granola Is the Health Food That's Often Dessert
The wholesome-looking bag can hide a candy-bar sugar load.
Granola looks like the responsible cereal. The oats and nuts are real. The problem is what holds them together.
The binder is usually sugar
Those satisfying clusters are glued with honey, syrup, or oil — often a lot of it. A single serving can carry as much sugar as a cookie, and almost nobody stops at one serving. It pours light, so a "serving" is smaller than you think.
Portion is the trap
Granola is calorie-dense by design. A casual bowl can be two or three official servings, quietly tripling the sugar and calories on the label.
The move
Check the sugar per serving, then check the serving size. Better yet, mix a little granola into plain yogurt as a topping — not as the whole bowl.
